Monschau is simply one of the most beautiful towns in Germany, situated in the Eiffel Mountains, just south of Aachen and close to the Belgian border. It is an idyllic town of narrowed steep-roofed, half-timbered houses and inns clustered along the banks of the river Rur, its Christmas market simply adds a sparkle to this wonderful setting. With our visit to Valkenburg this makes for a wonderful pre-Christmas break.
Carat Hotel, Monschau
Situated just 300 yards from the town centre in a quiet location, this hotel has modern style rooms, all tastefully furnished with private bathroom, telephone, mini-bar and colour TV. There is a lift to all floors and the hotel offers excellent leisure facilities including indoor pool, sauna and solarium.
Day 1 Departing from your close-to-home pick-up at approximately 6.00am we head to Folkestone for the Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. Heading through France we stop for lunch on the way to arrive in Monschau late afternoon in time for dinner.
Day 2 Today we head for the large Christmas markets in Aachen. Every year before Christmas the squares and streets round the cathedral and Aachen town hall are transformed into a paradise of lights and colours, festive sounds and seductive smells. The enormous choice between original, stylish and precious goods makes small and big dreams come true. It is really no wonder why the Aachen Christmas Market has become an absolute must.
Day 3 After breakfast you have a full free day to visit the centre of Monschau and enjoy the festivities of the Christmas market in this beautiful village. A visit to the glass works and craft market is not to be missed. A warming atmosphere of Christmas spirit helps to create the perfect shopping experience.
Day 4 We leave Germany today and travel through Belgium and France stopping in Bruges, time permitting, on the way back to Calais for the return train to Folkestone arriving in Chelmsford mid-evening.
