Overview

Passport required. Currency - Euro.

A sizable city in its own right, Arnhem is best known today as the site of one of the most famous battles of World War II. Given city rights in 1233, it has long been at the centre of conflicts because of its strategic location on the banks of the Rhine River. Your Holiday Itinerary

Day 1 Departing from your close-to-home pick-up we head to Folkestone for the Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. Heading through France and Belgium with a stop for lunch on the way to arrive in Arnhem late afternoon in time for dinner.

Day 2 After breakfast this morning we visit the Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein', a superb and moving museum dedicated to the 1944 Battle of Arnhem story, housed within the impressive 19th century Villa Hartenstein (former headquarters of the British command during the battle). We can then visit Arnhem Oosterbeek war cemetery where nearly 2000 allied servicemen are buried before making our way to the Netherlands open air museum. We can enjoy lunch here before experiencing a slice of Dutch life and history as we wander through a beautiful estate populated with over 80 historic houses, farmhouses and mills. Our guided tour really brings the history and culture of the Netherlands to Life. We can meet friendly farmers, the blacksmith fisherman and miller and travel on an historic tram around the park.

Day 3 After breakfast this morning, we make our way to the Dutch Baroque 17th Century Paleis Het Loo, the former Royal residence of the Dutch Royal family and a marvellous opulent building set within beautiful gardens. This is the only Royal building in Holland that is open to the public and the Dutch Royal family to this day hold all of their christenings here. In the afternoon we will have time to explore Arnhem at our leisure.

Day 4 We leave Eastern Holland today and travel through Belgium and France stopping on route for lunch, as we make our way back to Calais for the return train to Folkestone arriving in Chelmsford mid-evening.
