Without doubt this area contains some of the most spectacular Alpine scenery anywhere. Huge snow-capped mountains tower over crystal clear lakes and meadows of Alpine flowers, lovely villages sprinkled with traditional chalets and mountain resorts and to complete the picture, 'Mad Ludwig's' stunning fairytale Palaces and a taste of the Romantic Road.

Saarbrucken area, Germany (Overnight x 2)
Day 1 After meeting the coach at your 'near to home' pick-up we head to Kent for our channel crossing to Calais. Joining the motorway we travel through Belgium to Germany to arrive at our overnight hotel in the Saarbrucken area for dinner bed and breakfast.
Day 2 After breakfast we depart for one of the most impressive medieval towns in Germany, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A local guide will await you and take you on a fantastic tour through the quaint alleys via cobbled stones. The highlight will be a walk on the impressive city walls which are still intact. You will then continue your journey towards the Ammergauer Alps where you will check in to your hotel.
Day 3 Today we travel through picturesque alpine landscapes until you reach Linderhof nestled in a lovely valley. Linderhof Palace is architecturally impressive and has many highlights including the hall of mirrors, where King Ludwig II loved to read in the evenings, the Venus Grotto, wholly artificial and built to illustrate the first act of Wagners 'Tannhauser' and the Moroccan House. The landscaped gardens cover an area of about 50 hectares and are perfectly integrated into the surrounding natural alpine landscape. Enjoy a stroll around before continuing to the little village of Ettal, which is popular for its Abbey. The Monks still brew their own beer to this day and the local cheese dairy makes cheese from the fresh milk of alpine cows. Return to hotel for dinner.
Day 4 Free day to enjoy the idyllic surroundings of the hotel, enjoy the facilities or take time to explore the village of Bad Kohlgrub, where the special treatment is mud!
Day 5 Munich was the home of Bavarian Kings and Queens and still is a majestic city with beautiful surroundings. We have arranged a half day guided tour of the city to see why the capital of Bavaria lures millions of tourists each year. You will visit the Olympic Park, where once the first Zeppelins landed and which became the site for the 1972 games. You will have some free time to explore before heading to the Town Hall on the Marienplatz to see the Glocken spiel clock with its entertaining figures jousting at noon and 5pm. Our evening meal will be in a typical Bavarian biergarten restaurant with traditional local specialties.
Day 6 Board the ferry in Prien at Lake Chiem and sail to the island. Once crowned King of Bavaria, Ludwig II commissioned the finest architects to create a palace similar to Versailles in France. In 1873 he purchased Herrenchiemsee Island, the biggest on Lake Chiem and construction of the Bavarian Versailles commenced five years later. It was the most expensive palace built by Ludwig II and was still incomplete when he died. The highlights are without doubt the state staircase, the Great Hall of Mirrors and the state Bedroom. Not only was the palace copied, the gardens of Versailles as well as its fountains, statues and huge ornamental ponds were also replicated. Stroll through the park to the King Ludwig II Museum where the story of the Swan King's life is documented by means of busts, painted portraits and historic state robes. Highlights of the museum include magnificent furniture originally housed in the destroyed Royal Apartment of the Munich Residenz and the first bedroom of Linderhof Palace. After this Royal tour, board the ferry back to the mainland and return by coach to your hotel for dinner.
Day 7 Alas, we begin our homeward journey today driving northwards through Germany and onto our overnight hotel in Saarbrucken.
Day 8 Continuing our journey home we head up the Rhine Valley and make our way to Calais and short crossing back to Dover arriving in the Chelmsford area mid-evening.
